The striking train is released a few seconds before the hour, then the hammer is raised a fraction more before falling to sound the bell. The hammer is again raised by the clock and falls six seconds later, and so on until the full hour has been struck. After the last blow, the hammer is raised almost to the point of dropping to be ready for the next hour. On coming out of the bell enclosure, we look towards New Palace Yard; our progress is barred by a railing. Looking downwards, we see that the flooring is a cast-iron grating; once we focus our eyes through the grating we see that we are looking down the inside of the great air shaft, which descends out of sight.
One major requirement was that the Clock Tower had to contain a major air shaft that ran from the fi rst storey all the way up to the belfry. This measured around 8 feet by 16 feet; initially the idea was to draw fresh air in at the top of the shaft and then distribute it through the Palace. Although Reid was dismissed in 1852, work on the Clock Tower had started and the air shaft was built. The whole of the ventilation system was a problem; by the time the clock came to be installed, Barry had altered the ventilation scheme so that the air shaft was being used as a chimney.
