My study found no evidence for this and concluded the opposite – which was that boys had the same coping strategies as girls, namely limited resistance within accommodation. However, this did not shield any of these boys from exclusion or punishment. I was left, then, with a new hypothesis about coping strategies – which states that no matter how good the coping strategies of African-Caribbean boys they will always end up subject to negative discipline. RAISING THE ISSUES • 17 All the boys in my study had to pay the price of ignoring their peergroup, ethnicity and anti-school sub-culture in order to take the individualistic road of ‘making-it’.

The boys I interviewed at John Caxton helped raise the key issues for my main study in terms of methodology and the research focus. ‘Township’ School is a boys’ comprehensive school with a roll of 497. There is no sixth form. At the time of research there were 61 students of Asian origin, 63 of African origin, 140 of African-Caribbean origin, 31 mixed-race students, 127 white boys and 23 others. The school is located in one of the richest areas in England and is surrounded by several public schools which have achieved some of the best examination results in the national examination league tables.
