But if I claim, as I have been doing lately, that composition burgeoned in America because of the demand of women to be taught rhetoric, the corresponding responses of men, and the general educational changes forced on colleges by coeducation after 1840, I will need to provide considerable evidence and extensive corroboration for Page 28 that claim. It is a novel claim, and one that must be strenuously supported if it is to be accepted. My internal criticism of sources, given the intensely polemical nature of most of the nineteenth-century debates on coeducation and rhetorical training for women, will need to be deep.
Knowledge of the present is important data for any historian, but it is particularly fundamental to the history of composition studies, because that history is relatively short. Historians of classical rhetoric, for instance, use their knowledge of the present day primarily in a general way; they examine claims and written sources from ancient Greece with their own perceptions of rhetorical action and their own knowledge of human and institutional behavior in mind.
