On 11 October, Bulgaria joined the Central Powers.

Przemysl was in a stronger position than Lemberg. With more modern guns, a high-grade garrison, sufficient food and ammunition for months, it was expected to withstand a siege for at least eight months. Lacking sufficiently heavy artillery to damage the fort, and finding considerable resistance to their attacks, the Russians decided to put defences on the approaches to Przemysl to stop any relief. They then moved in the direction of Cracow in attempt to get there before the Germans could set up their defences.

The year for both sides was easy to sum up. Two large Russian armies, poorly equipped, gallantly but ineptly led, had immediately attacked East Prussia. ‘Although ultimately disastrous, their misguided onslaught did serve to force the Germans to withdraw forces from the West at a critical time. ’ However, the Russian invasion of Galicia had proved less easy to contain but was eventually blocked a few miles east of Cracow. ‘The campaigns of 1914 exhausted nearly all the available German stocks of war material.
